Our History

477 is rich in history, incorporating three remarkable heritage properties: the original Australian Gaslight Co (AGL) showroom, a Presbyterian manse and Sydney’s first-ever fire station.

The current property was completed in 1991, however, its history dates back to 1846 when the two-storey stone Presbyterian manse was constructed on the corner of Pitt and Hay Street. In 1857, Sydney’s first fire station was built on Pitt Street, and in 1922 the Australian Gaslight Company (AGL) built its head office and original showroom for gas lights, which was the latest technology at the time.

Our History

With its domed ceiling and classic columns, the striking space that once housed the AGL showroom is often referred to as the crown of 477.

In 1991, the Federal Government constructed the commercial and retail tower, bringing the three heritage properties together in one overall complex.

The fascinating history of 477 will be respected and preserved throughout its ongoing and modern transformation.

Spaces

With its rich history dating back to the Industrial Revolution, one of the most unique architectural spaces within 477 is the original AGL showroom. This grand and iconic location is being transformed into an uber-unique event space, continuing on its legacy of innovation.

The oasis garden that is the outdoor terrace offers views of Surry Hills, Broadway and Chinatown. The area is a natural space available to the building community for events or a simple moment of quiet relaxation.

A dedicated community manager ensures the 477 community is socially connected with a yearly calendar of events, workshops, and wellness activations.
